Seat Belt Pretensioner Replacement

A lot of people don’t realize their seat belts are part of the same crash system as the airbags. In a real impact, a small pyrotechnic charge called a pretensioner fires to yank the belt tight and hold you against the seat. Once it fires, that belt is spent — it may feel locked solid, refuse to pull out, or sit loose and never retract.

A belt that won’t lock and tighten in the next crash isn’t protecting you, even if it still buckles. That’s why a belt with a fired pretensioner has to be replaced, not just clicked back in. That’s the work we do — at your home or work, anywhere in DFW.

Seat belt repair or seat belt replacement? The straight answer

Most people search for “seat belt repair near me,” so here is the honest answer: LockNCal does not repair, rebuild, re-web, or “reset” seat belts — we replace them. Some services will open a retractor, reload a pretensioner, or sew new webbing into an old belt. We don’t, because a seat belt only proves it works in a crash, and there is no way to test a rebuilt one in your driveway.

When your belt is locked, loose, frayed, or tied to an airbag light, we remove the damaged part and install a new OEM or used OEM assembly — the retractor and pretensioner, the buckle, or the complete belt, depending on what failed. You get a belt that tightens, locks, and holds the way the manufacturer designed it to.

What actually happens to a seat belt in a crash

Modern seat belts have three parts that all react in a collision, and any of them can be why your belt isn’t working right now:

  • The pretensioner — a one-time pyrotechnic charge that snaps the belt tight the instant a crash is detected. Once fired, it’s done and the belt usually locks or goes limp.
  • The retractor lock — the mechanism that stops the belt from spooling out. After a hard hit it can seize permanently, so the belt won’t pull out at all.
  • The load limiter — designed to let out a little webbing to reduce chest injury; once it’s deployed, the belt no longer holds tension correctly.
  • The webbing itself — can be cut, frayed, or heat-damaged from the pretensioner and needs replacing if compromised.

Signs your seat belt needs to be replaced

You don’t need a technician to spot most seat belt failures. If any of these sound familiar, the belt is no longer doing its job:

  • The belt is locked and won’t pull out — common right after a collision when the pretensioner fired or the retractor seized.
  • The belt won’t retract or hangs loose instead of winding back into the pillar.
  • The buckle won’t latch, won’t release, or the tongue pops out under a firm tug. See our seat belt buckle guide.
  • The seat belt warning chime or light stays on even when you’re buckled — often a failed buckle sensor.
  • The airbag / SRS light is on after an accident — a fired pretensioner stores a fault in the airbag system.
  • The webbing is cut, frayed, stiff, or melted anywhere along its length.

Seat belt parts we replace

  • Retractor and pretensioner assembly — the spool in the pillar and the one-time charge that tightens the belt. This is the part that fails most after a crash. Details in our pretensioner replacement guide.
  • Buckle and buckle pretensioner — many vehicles have a second pretensioner in the buckle stalk next to the seat.
  • Buckle sensor — the switch that tells the car (and the airbag system) you’re buckled in.
  • Complete seat belt assembly — when the webbing is damaged, we replace the whole belt rather than re-sewing it.

We work on front and rear belts on American and Asian vehicles, model year 2008 and newer. We don’t do on-site seat belt work on European makes.

After an accident: which seat belts need replacing?

Any belt whose pretensioner fired has to be replaced — it’s a single-use part. In a moderate or severe crash that is usually both front belts, and on some vehicles the rear outboard belts or the buckle pretensioners too. Manufacturers also call for inspecting any belt that was worn during the crash.

Because the pretensioners are wired into the airbag system, the airbag light will usually stay on until the crash data is cleared. We handle both in the same visit: replace the belts, then reset the airbag module so the SRS light goes off for the right reason. Our seat belt replacement after an accident guide walks through the full checklist. It’s also worth checking your VIN for open seat belt recalls at NHTSA.gov.

Common questions

My seat belt is locked and won’t pull out after an accident — can it be fixed?

Usually yes. A belt that’s seized after a collision almost always has a fired pretensioner or a locked retractor. We replace those parts so the belt pulls out, retracts, and locks correctly again. You’ll see your exact price in about 60 seconds when you book online.

Do I have to replace the whole seat belt or just part of it?

It depends on what deployed. Often only the retractor and pretensioner assembly needs replacing while the buckle is fine. If the webbing is cut or heat-damaged, we replace the complete belt. We confirm exactly what your belt needs on site.

Is it safe to drive with a seat belt that won’t retract?

It’s risky. A belt that won’t tighten or lock can’t restrain you properly in another crash. We’d recommend replacing it before relying on it — and it’s often a same-visit fix.

What does seat belt replacement cost?

You’ll see your exact price in about 60 seconds when you book online. The final price depends on how many belts fired and whether the webbing needs replacing. We confirm the price on site after inspecting each belt.

Do you come to me, or do I bring the car in?

We come to you. We’re a mobile service across all of Dallas–Fort Worth — home, work, or a body shop.

Can a seat belt be repaired instead of replaced?

Some services rebuild retractors, reload pretensioners, or re-web belts. We don’t. A rebuilt belt can’t be tested outside a crash, so we replace the damaged part with a new OEM or OEM-reman assembly.

How long does seat belt replacement take?

Most jobs are done in a single visit. The time depends on how many belts need replacing and how much interior trim has to come off to reach them.

Will replacing the seat belt turn off my airbag light?

Not always. A fired pretensioner stores crash data in the airbag module, so the light usually stays on until that data is cleared. We can replace the belts and reset the airbag module in the same visit.

Do you replace seat belts on European cars?

No. On-site seat belt replacement is for American and Asian vehicles, model year 2008 and newer. For European makes we offer the mail-in airbag module reset only.
