Seat belt pretensioner replacement

A lot of people don’t realize their seat belts are part of the same crash system as the airbags. In a real impact, a small pyrotechnic charge called a pretensioner fires to yank the belt tight and hold you against the seat. Once it fires, that belt is spent — it may feel locked solid, refuse to pull out, or sit loose and never retract.

A belt that won’t lock and tighten in the next crash isn’t protecting you, even if it still buckles. That’s why a belt with a blown pretensioner has to be replaced or rebuilt, not just clicked back in. That’s the work we do — at your home or work, anywhere in DFW.

What actually happens to a seat belt in a crash

Modern seat belts have three parts that all react in a collision, and any of them can be why your belt isn’t working right now:

  • The pretensioner — a one-time pyrotechnic charge that snaps the belt tight the instant a crash is detected. Once fired, it’s done and the belt usually locks or goes limp.
  • The retractor lock — the mechanism that stops the belt from spooling out. After a hard hit it can seize permanently, so the belt won’t pull out at all.
  • The load limiter — designed to let out a little webbing to reduce chest injury; once it’s deployed, the belt no longer holds tension correctly.
  • The webbing itself — can be cut, frayed, or heat-damaged from the pretensioner and needs replacing if compromised.

Why drivers trust us with seat-belt work

  • 🔒 Restored to factory spec — We rebuild the pretensioner and retractor so the belt actually tightens in a crash — not a bypass that fakes the light off.
  • 🚗 Mobile across DFW — We come to you. No towing a car with locked belts to a shop.
  • 🔧 Restraint-system specialists — Seat belts, airbags, and SRS modules are what we do every day — most general shops send this work out.

Common questions

My seat belt is locked and won’t pull out after an accident — can it be fixed?

Usually yes. A belt that’s seized after a collision almost always has a fired pretensioner or a locked retractor. We rebuild or replace those components so the belt pulls out, retracts, and locks correctly again. Starting at $300 per belt.

Do I have to replace the whole seat belt or just part of it?

It depends on what deployed. Often only the pretensioner and retractor need rebuilding while the webbing and buckle are fine. If the webbing is cut or heat-damaged, that gets replaced too. We confirm exactly what your belt needs on site.

Is it safe to drive with a seat belt that won’t retract?

It’s risky. A belt that won’t tighten or lock can’t restrain you properly in another crash. We’d recommend getting it restored before relying on it — and it’s often a same-visit fix.

What does seat belt replacement cost?

It starts at $300 per belt. The final price depends on how many belts fired and whether the webbing needs replacing. We confirm the price on site after inspecting each belt.

Do you come to me, or do I bring the car in?

The website was easy to navigate and I found the service I needed and was able to book the perfect time between work. The technician messaged me a day early letting me know that he would be in the area and gave me the option to get it taken care of early but unfortunately I was working. If I hadn't been that would have been amazing to get it done ahead of time. He was on time and very pleasant. Worked quickly and got my problem taken care of. It was such a better experience than sitting in a waiting room with strangers or having to take an Uber back and forth to avoid such situation. I'm already recommending them to my friends because of how easy it was. Why go to a shop to get your car fixed at the shop can just come to you?

This is my first mobile mechanic experience and I have to say Jose made it the best. He was early on the appointment he was very professional very knowledgeable and polite. If you need a mobile mechanic call lockncal and try to get Jose out he'll fix you right up. I have to admit that I was a little skeptical about paying up front because I've never used this type of service before but the end result I am very pleased and will use this service again thank you Jose again if I need anything else I'll get you out to fix it.

Jose contacted me swiftly after I filled out the form on the website and discussed the part needed (clock spring) and the appointment time. I was able to get in within 2 days. He arrived early and got right to work and was done rather quickly. He communicated well the whole time. I’m very glad to be back on the road and know my airbag light is off and all my steering wheel buttons work again!

This is a great company to deal with ,my cruise control stopped working & they came out & gave a free diagnosis which gave a clear picture of what was exactly wrong ,highly recommended ,very professional & honest, thank you again !!!

I initially went to the dealership when the airbag light in my Nissan Rogue had come on. Upon diagnostic review, the dealership advised that it would cost around $4500 to correct the issues that they were seeing with the system. I decided to get a 2nd opinion and I called DFW Safety Restore. Jose was able to work me in next day. He was prompt and right on time for my appointment in coming out to my house to run a diagnostic on my car. The first scan showed a host of issues, the same issues the dealership reported and more. So many, that Jose suggested resetting the codes and rerunning the diagnostic to get a true picture of what was going on. He said if there are true issues with the system the diagnostic codes would reappear. The reset worked and the system went back to normal. I am so thankful for Jose, and DFW Safety Restore for saving me from unnecessary and very expensive work on my car. If you have airbag system issues with your vehicle, I highly, HIGHLY, recommend you give DFW Safety Restore a call first.
