What actually happens to a seat belt in a crash
Modern seat belts have three parts that all react in a collision, and any of them can be why your belt isn’t working right now:
- The pretensioner — a one-time pyrotechnic charge that snaps the belt tight the instant a crash is detected. Once fired, it’s done and the belt usually locks or goes limp.
- The retractor lock — the mechanism that stops the belt from spooling out. After a hard hit it can seize permanently, so the belt won’t pull out at all.
- The load limiter — designed to let out a little webbing to reduce chest injury; once it’s deployed, the belt no longer holds tension correctly.
- The webbing itself — can be cut, frayed, or heat-damaged from the pretensioner and needs replacing if compromised.

Do I have to replace the whole seat belt or just part of it?

I initially went to the dealership when the airbag light in my Nissan Rogue had come on. Upon diagnostic review, the dealership advised that it would cost around $4500 to correct the issues that they were seeing with the system. I decided to get a 2nd opinion and I called DFW Safety Restore. Jose was able to work me in next day.
