Key not detected? That message means your car’s keyless system cannot hear your smart key fob. Nine times out of ten the cause is a weak fob battery or radio interference, and you can usually still start the car by holding the fob right against the push-button start. If your spare key also shows “key not detected,” the problem is in the car’s antenna or immobilizer system, and that is exactly what our mobile locksmiths fix across Dallas–Fort Worth.

What “Key Not Detected” Means

Push-button start cars constantly look for your smart key with low-frequency antennas in the cabin. When you press the start button, the car sends a signal, the fob answers with an encrypted code, and the immobilizer only lets the engine start when that answer is correct. A “key not detected” warning (some makes say “no key detected,” “key fob not detected,” or “no remote detected”) means that conversation failed. The car either did not hear the fob or did not trust what it heard.

That can come from the key, from something blocking the signal, or from the vehicle itself. Figuring out which one takes about two minutes if you follow the steps below.

Common Causes of a Key Not Detected Message

  • Weak fob battery. By far the most common cause. The fob still unlocks the doors from close range, but it is too weak to answer the start request. Most fobs use a small coin cell.
  • Radio interference. Phone chargers, dash cams, plug-in LED lights, a phone sitting on top of the fob, or strong transmitters near parking garages and cell towers can drown out the fob’s signal.
  • Key stored in the wrong spot. A fob inside a metal case, a foil-lined bag, or buried under other keys and electronics may not be detected.
  • Damaged or water-soaked fob. A dropped or wet key can lose its transponder or radio circuit even if the buttons seem to work.
  • Key lost its programming. After a battery swap, a dead car battery, or a module replacement, some keys lose sync with the car and need to be programmed again.
  • Low vehicle battery. A weak 12-volt battery can make the keyless system unreliable before the car shows other symptoms.
  • Vehicle antenna, receiver, or immobilizer fault. If every key fails, the problem is in the car: a failed antenna, receiver, or immobilizer module, sometimes with a stored code such as P0513 (incorrect immobilizer key).

How to Fix Key Not Detected: Step by Step

  1. Use the backup start method. Most push-button cars let you start with a weak fob by holding the key fob against the start button (or placing it in a marked slot, pocket, or cup holder on some models) and pressing the brake. Your owner’s manual shows the exact spot for your vehicle.
  2. Remove interference. Unplug chargers and accessories, move your phone away from the key, and try again.
  3. Try your spare key. If the spare works, the original key is the problem. If the spare also says key not detected, the problem is in the vehicle.
  4. Replace the fob battery. Match the exact battery type printed on the old cell, install it with the correct side up, and test again.
  5. Check the car battery. Dim lights, slow cranking, or other warning messages point to a weak 12-volt battery.
  6. If it still fails, get the key and immobilizer tested. A technician can read immobilizer codes, test key signal strength, and program a new or existing key to your vehicle.

Tip: do not keep pressing buttons or swapping keys over and over. Some vehicles lock out key learning for a period of time after repeated failed attempts.

Is It Safe to Keep Driving?

If the key not detected message appears while you are already driving, the engine will not shut off. The car is warning you that it cannot find the key right now, so you may not be able to restart once you turn it off. Do not stop somewhere you would be stranded. Fix the fob battery first, and if the warning keeps coming back, get it checked before it leaves you stuck.

Popular vehicles we program keys for

Many drivers who see key not detected drive push-button models like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Ford F-150, and Honda Pilot. Each guide explains which key type your vehicle uses.

How Much Does It Cost?

It depends on your vehicle and the fix. A fob battery is inexpensive, while a new smart key or immobilizer programming depends on the make, model, year, and key type. Any single number online would be wrong for someone, so we price your exact vehicle up front. Get an exact quote in about 60 seconds, with no hidden fees.

Before any key or immobilizer work, it is also worth checking your VIN for open recalls on NHTSA’s recall lookup.

We do it all at your location: cut the key and program the chip or smart fob so it starts your Accord. One visit and you have a real working spare. And because we’re a NASTF-credentialed Vehicle Security Professional, we carry the secured tools and OEM access to program the newer push-to-start Accords that many locksmiths have to turn away.

Key Not Detected FAQ

Why does my car say key not detected when the key is inside?

Usually the fob battery is too weak to answer the car’s start request, or something is blocking the signal, such as a phone, charger, or metal case. Hold the fob against the start button to start the car, then replace the fob battery.

Can I start my car if it says key not detected?

Most push-button cars have a backup method: hold the key fob against the start button, or place it in a marked slot or pocket, and press the brake while pressing start. Check your owner’s manual for the exact location.

Will a new key fob battery fix key not detected?

Often, yes. If the message goes away after a new battery, you are done. If it continues, or your spare key shows the same message, the key needs programming or the vehicle has an antenna or immobilizer fault.

Do I need to go to the dealer to fix key not detected?

No. A mobile automotive locksmith can test your keys, replace and program smart keys, and diagnose immobilizer problems at your location, usually faster than a dealer appointment and without a tow.

What if I have no working key at all?

That is an all keys lost job. We can make and program a new smart key on site for American and Asian vehicles 2008 and newer, with proof of ownership.
