After a windshield replacement, a collision repair, or even a wheel alignment, your car’s driver-assist cameras and radar have to be recalibrated to the manufacturer’s exact spec — or features like automatic braking and lane-keep can aim at the wrong spot. ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — the cameras, radar, and sensors behind features like automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise, and blind-spot monitoring. They only work if they’re aimed exactly where the manufacturer intended, down to a fraction of a degree.
Move or disturb one of those sensors — replace the windshield the forward camera looks through, repair a bumper that houses the radar, or change ride height — and the system is now pointed slightly off. It may still show no dashboard warning while quietly braking late or reading the wrong lane. Calibration re-aims everything to spec so the safety features actually protect you.
Static vs. dynamic calibration — and when you need it
There are two calibration methods, and many vehicles need one or both:
You typically need a calibration after any of these: a windshield replacement, a front or rear collision repair, bumper removal, camera or radar replacement, a suspension or ride-height change, or a wheel alignment on ADAS-equipped vehicles.
- Static calibration (from $450) — done with targets and boards at precise measured distances, in a controlled space. Common for front cameras and many radar units.
- Dynamic calibration (from $350) — done by driving the vehicle at set speeds on marked roads while the system relearns. Common for radar and some camera systems.
- Both — some vehicles require a static setup followed by a dynamic road procedure to finish.

Common questions
Do I really need an ADAS calibration after a windshield replacement?
If your vehicle has a forward-facing camera mounted at the windshield (most cars with lane-keep or automatic braking do), then yes. The camera looks through the glass; replace the glass and the camera’s aim shifts. Manufacturers require a recalibration, and skipping it can leave automatic braking and lane-keep reading the road wrong.
What’s the difference between static and dynamic calibration?
Static is done standing still using targets at precise distances in a controlled space. Dynamic is done by driving the car at set speeds so the system relearns on the road. Some vehicles need one, some need both — we run whatever your vehicle’s procedure calls for.

I initially went to the dealership when the airbag light in my Nissan Rogue had come on. Upon diagnostic review, the dealership advised that it would cost around $4500 to correct the issues that they were seeing with the system. I decided to get a 2nd opinion and I called DFW Safety Restore. Jose was able to work me in next day. He was prompt and right on time for my appointment in coming out to my house to run a diagnostic on my car. The first scan showed a host of issues, the same issues the dealership reported and more. So many, that Jose suggested resetting the codes and rerunning the diagnostic to get a true picture of what was going on. He said if there are true issues with the system the diagnostic codes would reappear. The reset worked and the system went back to normal.
