The clock spring — also called the spiral cable — is a flat, coiled ribbon of wiring hidden behind your steering wheel. Because the wheel turns but the wiring can’t, this coil winds and unwinds to keep a constant electrical connection to everything mounted in the wheel: the driver airbag, the horn, the cruise and audio buttons, and the steering angle sensor.

Will replacing the clock spring turn off my airbag light?
If the clock spring is what’s triggering it, yes — once we replace it and clear the code, the light goes off and stays off. If another part of the airbag system is also faulty, we’ll find that during the scan and tell you what else it needs.
Can a clock spring be repaired instead of replaced?
Not reliably. The ribbon cable inside is a wear item; once it’s broken or worn through, it’s replaced with the correct part for your vehicle. Trying to patch it tends to fail again quickly.
Why did my horn and steering-wheel buttons stop working at the same time as the airbag light?
Because they all run through the clock spring. When that coiled ribbon breaks, it can cut power to the airbag circuit (light on), the horn, and the wheel-mounted buttons all at once — which is the classic clock-spring signature.

I initially went to the dealership when the airbag light in my Nissan Rogue had come on. Upon diagnostic review, the dealership advised that it would cost around $4500 to correct the issues that they were seeing with the system. I decided to get a 2nd opinion and I called DFW Safety Restore. Jose was able to work me in next day.
