Dealer vs locksmith car key replacement comparison

For most drivers, a locksmith is the cheaper and faster choice for car keys. An automotive locksmith typically charges $45–$95 to program a key fob versus $150–$400 at a dealership, and $100–$300 for a full key replacement versus $250–$500+ at a dealer, and a mobile locksmith comes to you in 15–30 minutes with no need to tow your car. The dealership is only the better option in a few specific cases. In DFW, LockNCal’s mobile locksmith service starts at $250 for a key copy and $350 for an all-keys-lost job for businesses ($350 / $450 for individuals), with on-site confirmation, and we come to your vehicle.

Dealer vs. locksmith: side-by-side

Factor Automotive locksmith Dealership
Key fob programming $45–$95 $150–$400
Full key/fob replacement $100–$300 $250–$500+
Comes to you? Yes — mobile, on-site No, you go to them
All keys lost: two required? No — keys cut & programmed on-site Often yes — tow to dealership
Typical turnaround 15–30 min, often same day Appointment: can take days for ordered keys
Best for Most makes/models, lost keys, spares, fast on-site service A few brand-new models needing dealer-only software, or warranty work

Why locksmiths cost less

Dealerships carry high overhead and use proprietary ordering and programming workflows, so they charge the most — often for the same result. A qualified automotive locksmith uses equivalent diagnostic and key-programming equipment, carries common key blanks and fobs, and works from your driveway or parking lot. That removes dealership markup, appointment delays, and — critically for a lost-key situation — the cost and hassle of towing your vehicle in.

Car key cost by vehicle type

Vehicle / key type Typical total cost (key + programming)
Economy car, basic transponder or fob $75–$150
Mid-range vehicle, smart key/fob $150–$300
Luxury/import, high-security smart key $350–$600+
Industry ranges (AAA and locksmith data, 2025–2026). The exact price depends on the make, model, and key technology.

When the dealership is the better choice

A locksmith is the right call for the large majority of cars, but go to the dealer when:

  • Your vehicle is brand-new, and its key software isn’t yet available outside the dealer network.
  • The work is covered under warranty or a recall.
  • You need a rare or manufacturer-restricted key that only the dealer can source.

Even then, ask for an itemized quote — programming and key-cutting fees stack up quickly at a dealership.

The website was easy to navigate and I found the service I needed and was able to book the perfect time between work. The technician messaged me a day early letting me know that he would be in the area and gave me the option to get it taken care of early but unfortunately I was working. If I hadn't been that would have been amazing to get it done ahead of time. He was on time and very pleasant. Worked quickly and got my problem taken care of. It was such a better experience than sitting in a waiting room with strangers or having to take an Uber back and forth to avoid such situation. I'm already recommending them to my friends because of how easy it was. Why go to a shop to get your car fixed at the shop can just come to you?

This is my first mobile mechanic experience and I have to say Jose made it the best. He was early on the appointment he was very professional very knowledgeable and polite. If you need a mobile mechanic call lockncal and try to get Jose out he'll fix you right up. I have to admit that I was a little skeptical about paying up front because I've never used this type of service before but the end result I am very pleased and will use this service again thank you Jose again if I need anything else I'll get you out to fix it.

Jose contacted me swiftly after I filled out the form on the website and discussed the part needed (clock spring) and the appointment time. I was able to get in within 2 days. He arrived early and got right to work and was done rather quickly. He communicated well the whole time. I’m very glad to be back on the road and know my airbag light is off and all my steering wheel buttons work again!

This is a great company to deal with ,my cruise control stopped working & they came out & gave a free diagnosis which gave a clear picture of what was exactly wrong ,highly recommended ,very professional & honest, thank you again !!!

I initially went to the dealership when the airbag light in my Nissan Rogue had come on. Upon diagnostic review, the dealership advised that it would cost around $4500 to correct the issues that they were seeing with the system. I decided to get a 2nd opinion and I called DFW Safety Restore. Jose was able to work me in next day. He was prompt and right on time for my appointment in coming out to my house to run a diagnostic on my car. The first scan showed a host of issues, the same issues the dealership reported and more. So many, that Jose suggested resetting the codes and rerunning the diagnostic to get a true picture of what was going on. He said if there are true issues with the system the diagnostic codes would reappear. The reset worked and the system went back to normal. I am so thankful for Jose, and DFW Safety Restore for saving me from unnecessary and very expensive work on my car. If you have airbag system issues with your vehicle, I highly, HIGHLY, recommend you give DFW Safety Restore a call first.
